Our monarch butterfly caterpillars were not getting past the fat little caterpillar stage. Unfortunately that meant that perhaps there was something seriously wrong with our swan plants. I suspect that like many people who purchased them last year that they had been sprayed with a chemical toxic to caterpillars. Apparently that was the case (according to the garden centre man) and there were many sad little boys and girls all over Auckland.
Anyway we had three caterpillars and they were running out of plant to gobble anyway so we got them a couple of fresh new (unsprayed) plants to transfer them to, and yesterday Sofia collected up and washed the white pebbles in her red wheelbarrow and we repotted the new plants into a big pot from her Nana. They are joyously happy in their new home. I do suspect however we might need a couple more plants to sustain their hungry little selves.
